Motor insurance

Can overseas driving or motor-insurance history be recognised in Korea?

Motor-insurance history from abroad may be recognised as insurance experience for Korean motor insurance. The General Insurance Association of Korea’s official FAQ says that foreign insurance history and certain professional driving experience may be recognised. It also says that if the history was not reflected at enrollment, submitting evidence during the policy period may in some cases lead to a premium refund.

Submitting overseas history does not always reduce the premium. If the recognised period does not change the applicable pricing bracket, there may be no discount or refund. Confirm the final premium with the insurer under the proposed contract terms.

An Italian no-claims discount or bonus–malus class should not be assumed to transfer one-for-one into a Korean discount/surcharge class. Korea may recognise the existence and duration of the experience, while the applicable rate and classification follow Korean motor-insurance rules.

What to prepare before applying

Ask the insurer:

  • whether it recognises overseas insurance history, professional driving experience, or both;
  • whether evidence must be issued by an insurer, employer or public authority;
  • how the policyholder or insured person’s name, vehicle, insurance period and claims history must be shown;
  • whether a Korean or English translation is required;
  • whether notarisation or an apostille is required;
  • whether later submission can be applied retrospectively or produce a refund; and
  • how the recognised period would affect the actual premium.

Obtain the insurer’s required format before preparing the documents. Certificate formats vary by country and insurer, and this can prevent you from paying for a translation or authentication that is not accepted.

Official industry example

The General Insurance Association of Korea says that foreign insurance history may be recognised and that evidence provided during the policy period may lead to a refund when the history was missed at enrollment. It also advises checking with the insurer because the recognised period may not change the premium.

This is official industry guidance that recognition may be possible. It does not mean that a foreign discount class transfers unchanged or that every document is accepted automatically.
