Insurance in Korea

What should you check before signing an insurance contract?

The first question before buying insurance is whether you really need that policy. Check whether an employer group policy or another personal policy already provides similar coverage and whether you would be insuring the same risk twice. This is particularly important for indemnity-type insurance, where having multiple policies may not allow you to recover more than the loss actually incurred.

Second, consider how long you will need to pay the premium. Look beyond the first monthly payment and check the payment period, whether the policy renews, whether the premium may change at renewal, and whether you can sustain the cost over time. If you cancel early, the surrender value may be less than the premiums paid or there may be no surrender value.

Third, review the scope of coverage and its restrictions. Do not look only at the insured amount. Check exclusions, out-of-pocket amounts, waiting periods, reduced-benefit periods, annual and per-claim limits, frequency limits, and exclusions for particular conditions or parts of the body. Ask how the summary in the product information connects to the detailed policy terms.

Fourth, understand what must be disclosed before the contract. Answer the insurer’s questions about health, previous treatment, occupation and vehicle use accurately. If a question is unclear, ask what it means rather than guessing. Omitting an important fact can lead to cancellation of the contract or a dispute over a claim.

Fifth, check how the contract can be managed. Confirm which channels handle premium payments, changes of address or contact details, claims, cancellation and beneficiary changes. If you are not comfortable in Korean, ask which languages are available not only when you enroll but for service after the contract begins.

Finally, check whether a cooling-off right applies, its deadline and any exceptions. A statutory cooling-off system may apply to protection-type insurance, while some products, including compulsory motor-liability insurance, may be excluded. After receiving the contract documents, confirm again that the application and policy document match.

Ten checks before signing

  1. Do I need this coverage?
  2. Does it duplicate insurance I already have?
  3. Can I afford the premium for the full payment period?
  4. Is the policy renewable?
  5. What exclusions, out-of-pocket amounts and limits apply?
  6. Is there a waiting period or reduced-benefit period?
  7. Have I answered every pre-contract disclosure question accurately?
  8. What are the disadvantages of early cancellation?
  9. In which languages and through which channels can I claim, make changes or cancel after enrollment?
  10. Does the product have a cooling-off right, and what are its deadline and exceptions?
