NHIS · National Health Insurance
When do foreign residents enrol in NHIS in Korea?
There is no single rule saying that every foreign resident joins after six months. The starting date depends first on whether you are insured through a workplace and then on your residence status.
Employees at a workplace covered by National Health Insurance generally become employee-insured from the date they start the covered employment. The employer reports the enrolment. In limited cases, a foreign employee may apply for exclusion if the NHIS accepts proof of equivalent medical cover under the applicable rules; having travel insurance alone does not create an automatic exemption.
Residents who are not employee-insured may become locally insured. The general rule for eligible foreign residents is automatic enrolment after six months of continuous stay, but specific residence statuses have different starting dates. In particular, D-2 students and D-4-3 school students can be enrolled from foreign-resident registration on their first entry, while D-4 general trainees normally start after six months. A person who becomes employee-insured before the local-enrolment date follows the workplace rule instead.
NHIS uses immigration and registration information to process automatic enrolment and sends notices to the registered Korean address. If no notice or bill arrives when you expect one, confirm your status directly rather than assuming you are not covered.
What to check
- Are you registered as employee-insured, locally insured or a dependant?
- What residence status and entry or re-entry date does NHIS have on record?
- Is your Korean address current?
- If you claim equivalent overseas cover, has NHIS actually approved an exclusion?
