What happens to NHIS when you leave and re-enter Korea?

Departure can change NHIS eligibility, but the result depends on whether you are employee-insured or locally insured, how long you remain abroad, your residence status and your re-entry history.

Under the current rules, a foreign resident’s local-insurance eligibility can be lost from the day after departure when the overseas stay exceeds the prescribed period, generally one month. A short trip should not be treated automatically as permanent loss of eligibility. Employee-insured status also follows employment and residence rules, so confirm the record if employment continues during travel.

On re-entry, do not assume that everyone must always wait a new six months. Special rules can recognise re-entry within six months for a person who previously held local-insurance eligibility, has a valid eligible residence status and completes the required declaration and contribution adjustment. D-2 students and some other statuses also have their own acquisition dates. The actual result depends on the recorded departure, re-entry and visa history.

Premiums and healthcare use can be affected by the effective dates. Before treatment or after receiving an unexpected bill, ask NHIS to show the eligibility period and the basis for any retroactive contribution. Keep travel dates, residence documents and employment evidence available.

Private insurance is separate. A Korean private policy may remain in force or may exclude treatment abroad according to its terms; NHIS departure rules do not decide that question.

Before and after a long trip

  • Confirm whether and when eligibility will be lost or suspended.
  • Update the registered address and contact details.
  • On re-entry, check the effective date before assuming cover has restarted.
  • Ask whether a declaration or contribution adjustment is required.

Read D-2 and D-4 enrolment and what non-payment can cause. For private policies, see what happens to insurance when you leave Korea. Return to the NHIS guide.
