Motor insurance
What motor insurance is compulsory in Korea?
Anyone who owns a motor vehicle in Korea must carry the motor insurance required by law. This compulsory insurance provides a minimum level of protection for legal liability when the operation of a vehicle causes another person’s death or injury or damages someone else’s property.
In everyday terms, it refers to the portions of bodily-injury and property-damage liability coverage that Korean law makes compulsory. Statutory limits and enrollment conditions can change, so check the rules in force when you insure the vehicle with the insurer or through an official source.
Motor insurance can include several types of coverage in addition to the compulsory minimum. Examples include:
- liability for bodily injury or property damage above the compulsory limit;
- injury to the driver or passengers;
- collision, theft or natural-disaster damage to your own vehicle;
- injury caused by an uninsured vehicle;
- roadside assistance and other optional endorsements.
These additional coverages are not all compulsory. At the same time, the compulsory minimum may not cover the full financial consequences of a serious accident. The appropriate decision depends on understanding the scope and cost of each option. An information site should explain these differences rather than treating any optional coverage as universally necessary.
Always check the policy period shown on the policy document. Owning or driving a vehicle after its compulsory insurance has expired can create legal problems. If you sell or scrap the vehicle, or expect not to drive it for a long period, check the applicable registration or suspension procedure and the continuing insurance obligation before cancelling the policy.
What foreign residents should pay particular attention to
Do not stop at a message saying that “motor insurance is in place.” Check the following:
- Is the legally required coverage currently in force?
- What are the start and end dates of the policy?
- Is each person who will actually drive included within the permitted driver scope?
- Does the policy include optional coverage such as damage to your own vehicle?
- In which languages can you report an accident or request roadside assistance?
Claims to avoid
- “Every part of motor insurance is compulsory in Korea.”
- “Compulsory insurance will cover every cost arising from an accident.”
- “If you are not driving the car, you can cancel the insurance without completing any formal procedure.”
